Digging Deep: Hands-On with Dig VR at Gamescom 2024

Digging Deep: Hands-On with Dig VR at Gamescom 2024At this year’s Gamescom in Cologne, I had the opportunity to get my hands dirty (virtually, of course) with Dig VR, an immersive excavator simulator that’s breaking new ground in the VR space. Developed by Just Add Water and published by Wired Productions, this Meta Quest exclusive is set to launch on September 19th, 2024

Realistic Controls, Virtual Dirt

Stepping into the world of Dig VR, I was immediately struck by the attention to detail. The controls mimic those of an actual excavator, providing a surprisingly authentic feel. As I maneuvered the virtual digger, the responsiveness and weight of the machine translated remarkably well through the Quest’s controllers. The game offers both authentic and simplified control schemes, catering to both novices and experienced operators

The Meta Chair: A Game-Changer

The Dig VR team didn’t stop at just the software experience. They introduced me to the new Roto VR Explorer (Meta Chair), a specialized seat that takes the immersion to the next level. This chair moves in a 360-degree angle, syncing perfectly with your in-game movements, it significantly enhances the feeling of actually sitting in an excavator’s cab.

Welcome to Diglington

Dig VR isn’t just about operating machinery; it’s a full-fledged career simulation set in the charming town of Diglington. Players start with a mini-digger and work their way up to colossal machines, taking on various jobs for the town’s residents. From traditional construction tasks to quirky, unrealistic requests, the game promises a diverse range of challenges

Customization and Progression

One of the most exciting aspects of Dig VR is the progression system. Players can unlock up to four different machines, ranging from micro to large diggers, each with seven unique attachments. The game also boasts over 70 customization options, allowing players to personalize their diggers with decals, paint jobs, and skins

Beyond the Job Site

Dig VR offers more than just work simulations. The game features three mini-games, including duck hooking and digger bowling, which can be played solo or with a friend. There’s also a Zen Sandbox mode for those who want to dig, break, and build without pressure. For collectors, the Lost Treasure mode offers a fairground-style setting with regularly updated items to discover

Audiovisual Experience

The game’s audio design deserves special mention. Dig VR includes an in-game radio station, DIG FM, featuring over 45 original tracks across eight stations. This adds another layer of authenticity to the experience, mimicking the real-world habit of operators listening to music while working

The Team Behind the Dirt

One of the highlights of my Gamescom experience was interacting with the Dig VR team. Their passion for the project was evident, and they were more than happy to discuss the intricacies of their simulation. Their friendly demeanor and willingness to let attendees experiment with different aspects of the game, including the new Meta Chair, spoke volumes about their confidence in their product.

Digging Up the Future

While Dig VR might not be for everyone, it represents an exciting direction for VR gaming. It demonstrates how virtual reality can be used not just for entertainment, but also for practical training and simulation purposes. With its blend of authentic controls, casual gameplay, and charming setting, Dig VR is poised to carve out a unique niche in the VR market

As VR technology continues to evolve, games like Dig VR are paving the way for more immersive and realistic simulations. Whether you’re a seasoned operator looking to hone your skills or a curious gamer wanting to try something new, Dig VR is worth keeping an eye on when it launches this September. Just be prepared for the urge to start digging up your backyard after playing.
